ASTM WK30966

(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK30966 - Revision of A941 - 10a Standard Terminology Relating to Steel, Stainless Steel, Related Alloys, and Ferroalloys

Active Standard: A941 - 13

Developed by Subcommittee: A01.92 | Committee A01 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Rationale

In order to differentiate normalizing with accelerated cooling, such as by means of using a fan or fans in a bay in which austenitized ferritic product is cooled in air from above the transformation range, from rapid cooling that approximates liquid quenching, it is desirable to expand on the present definition of quenching. As a result of the discussion at the November 15, 2010, meeting of A01.92, this proposal was offered. Note: the word, equivalent, in the proposed revision, was chosen because of its flexibility of interpretation; either as fast as one could cool in a liquid; or fast enough to achieve the same resulting microstructure or condition as could be achieved by cooling in a liquid.
