    1. Rationale

    In early 2009, ASTM Committee D02 Subcommittee 7 requested the precision section of D2532 be reviewed to verify if the stated precisions were still appropriate for current commercial lubricants. This request followed an unsuccessful ballot to D2532-03 which was due for its five-year renewal in 2008 as required by ASTM by-laws. A review of the method found the present precision statement predates 1982 and the types of materials tested cannot be verified because there is no associated research report on file at ASTM. Subcommittee 7 Section A agreed to oversee this effort in concert with technical guidance from SAE E34 Propulsion Lubricants Committee. This effort was designated Task Group 24 under Section A. In June 2010, Subcommittee 7 successfully balloted a minor revision to D2532-10 with the following note added to Section 9 of the Precision section: NOTE 4This precision statement is under review by ASTM Committee D02.07. An inter-laboratory study (ILS) is underway to study the precision and bias for 10 commercial aviation turbine lubricants at -40C and -51C. This ILS is expected to be completed in 2010 with a ballot generated to revise this precision statement no later than 2011. This note is now published in D2532-10. This work item will cover a new ILS and revision to the D2532-10 precision section.
