1. Rationale
The specification uses, but does not define the following terms with respect to the section size of a forging which is to be subjected to mechanical tesing: nominal or principal outside rough machine diameter; large ends; collars; flanges; and journals. The terms used in this statement are not defined in the specification. This leaves interpretation of these terms up to the producer. Without clear definition of these terms, it is possible for testing to be taken from different sections of identically shaped forgings by multiple producers. The goal of this work item is to either define these terms or change the terminology to make clear the intended test location of forgings produced to ASTM A668.
