Work Item: ASTM WK28746 - New Practice for Design, Construction, Maintenance, Use, and Safety of Ice Hockey Rinks

    (What is a Work Item?)

Developed by Subcommittee: F08.66 | Committee F08 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Scope

1.1 The practice will provide consistent safety considerations in the design, layout specifications, construction, maintenance, safe operation, and use of ice hockey playing facilities. It is intended to standardize facility conditions for the design, construction, safe operational use, and maintenance of ice rinks and establish standards that will provide a level of conformity for the purpose of competition and reduce potential hazards to players, game officials, and spectators. 1.2 This practice shall be taken into consideration by architects, planners, engineers, construction companies, construction contractors, ice hockey playing facilities operators/owners, hockey league officials, maintenance personnel, and appropriate inspectors who may be involved in the design, construction, use, maintenance, and safe operation of ice hockey playing facilities. 1.3 This practice includes standards for developing an indoor ice rink/arena and the required safety program to insure a safe place for the public and players. This practice describes systematic procedures and criteria for the development of the arenas appurtenant facilities, safe use, operation, and maintenance. A description of several appurtenant facilities used in ice rink/arenas is included within this practice as examples of those that should be considered. 1.4 This practice addresses all phases related to the selection design, specification, installation procedures, safe operation, and maintenance of indoor rinks. Every arena is unique in material, architecture, operation, maintenance, and engineering and, therefore, will require technical review. This practice is meant to provide a prototype and is a practice to set forth measures for the development of safe ice arena venues. 1.5 This practice is pertinent to the support facilities of a multi-use ice arena. 1.6 This practice describes systematic procedures and criteria for the development of the arenas appurtenant facilities. A description of several appurtenant facilities used in ice rink/arenas is included within this practice as examples of those that should be considered. 1.7 This practice addresses those phases of a project related to the selection design, specification, and installation procedures. Every arena is unique in material, architecture, and engineering and, therefore, will require technical review. This practice is not meant to provide an architectural prototype, but is a practice to set forth measures for the development of safer ice arena venues.
