1. Scope
1.1 This test method covers the determination the storage modulus and flow point stress for greases with National Lubrication Grease Institute (NLGI) grades from 00 to 3. The storage modulus is a measure of the solid-like behavior of a grease. The point at which the storage modulus and the viscous modulus are equal may also be determined and this may be used as a value for the flow point stress of the sample. 1.2 Units-The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
This standard is needed because it will allow researchers to study the rheological properties of lubricating greases on small amounts of material. The method could also be used for quality control and used grease analysis.
