    New Terminology for Chromatography

    1. Scope

    1.1 This terminology standard covers primarily the terms and relationships used in chromatography, including gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, supercritical fluid chromatography, and ion chromatography. Electromigration methods, which are not necessarily chromatographic in nature, are beyond the scope of this standard terminology. This document incorporates and replaces previous ASTM standards E355 Standard Practice for Gas Chromatography Terms and Relationships, E682 Standard Practice for Liquid Chromatography Terms and Relationships, E1151 Standard Practice for Ion Chromatography Terms and Relationships, and E1449 Standard Guide for Supercritical Fluid Chromatography Terms and Relationships. This document was created in order to rectify the multiplicity of sometimes inconsistent Terms and Relationships definitions contained in the previous standards. In addition to carrying over and consolidating the definitions of these standards, some of the terms and relationships have been updated and new terms and relationships added to reflect new developments and changes in usage since the standards were last revised.

    E-13.19 has four Chromatography Terms and Relationships standards: E355 (GC), E682 (LC), E1151 (IC), and 1449 (SFC). This revision will incorporate E355, E682, E1151, and E1449, and rectify the terms as far as possible with existing IUPAC chromatography nomenclature. The standard terminology will be used across chromatography methods in ASTM as well as by others who wish to standardize their usage of chromatography terms and relationships.
