1. Rationale
The purpose of this ballot is to revise the current warnings which address suffocation hazards associated with caregivers using certain types of bedding which are not provided by the manufacturer. Despite the fact that a warning was added to the standard several years ago to address this issue, a review of incident data shows that suffocation as a result of added bedding is still a major factor contributing to infant death associated with these products. After discussion at a recent subcommittee meeting it was agreed that a stronger warning was needed and a task group was formed to develop appropriate wording for the warning. At the last meeting of the subcommittee at ASTM headquarters in Oct. 2009 the proposal of the task group was discussed and revised. At that time the subcommittee voted to send the proposal to ballot. Since that time, an additional task group was formed to coordinate with the CPSC on the upcoming NPR for bassinets and cradles.
