1. Scope
1.1 This practice covers the removal of bituminous paving materials from a truck by means of an automatic sampling device. The practice purpose is two-fold: (1) to provide more representative samples of the material than can be obtained by current practices requiring a technician reaching over the side of the truck, which would result in more accurate test results and (2) to remove sampling personnel from the potential hazards associated with current practices as regards exposure to high temperatures, moving vehicles, or accidents occurring while transporting samples down from a sampling rack to the ground. 1.2 Units-The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.3 The text of this practice references notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the practice. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
This practice attempts to address safety concerns brought about the current methodology for collecting bituminous mixture samples from trucks. It also attempts to improve consistency in the resulting samples taken from trucks.
