1.1 This practice provides product category rules for preparing environmental declarations for low slope roofing membranes based on cradle-to-grave life-cycle assessment (LCA) studies and other information. 1.2 Social and economic aspects of sustainability are outside the scope of this practice. 1.3 This practice does not specifically address information module declarations for limited portions of the product life cycle, but does not preclude the use of relevant portions of this practice to prepare information module declarations, provided that they are clearly identified as such, and state which life cycle phases are included and which are excluded. 1.4 This practice is intended specifically for low slope roofing membrane materials for which a standard specification exists under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D08, but the application of this practice to other low slope roofing membrane materials is not prohibited. 1.5 The use of this practice shall be limited to roofing membranes suitable for installation as the top (exposed, horizontal) layer of the roofing system, whether this quality is integral to the material or achieved by an external sunlight-resistant layer. In the latter case, the sunlight-resistant layer is considered part of the roofing membrane for purposes of this practice. 1.6 The effect of the roof membrane on the buildings energy use is outside the scope of this practice. 1.7 The text of this practice references notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the practice. 1.8 Units--The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. Energy shall be expressed in megajoules (MJ), mass shall be expressed in kilograms (kg), and area shall be expressed in square metres (m2). 1.9 This practice does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this practice to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
