ASTM WK26109

(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK26109 - Revision of E1823 - 09b Standard Terminology Relating to Fatigue and Fracture Testing

Active Standard: E1823 - 13

Developed by Subcommittee: E08.02 | Committee E08 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Rationale

Delete crack displacement and replace with crack opening displacement. E1823 will be changed via this ballot and any other standards using crack displacement will be editorially changed to crack-opening displacement. crack displacement is a phrase that is used in many standards, often without a definition. crack displacement will be replaced by crack opening displacement editorially in all standards using it. Known changes are identified below for reference only. In addition, update related terminology (crack tip opening displacement and crack mouth opening displacement) for consistency of use. Justification: It was determined that crack opening displacement is the more correct terminology. E561 does not reference crack opening displacement or crack displacement so the discussion and reference are no longer valid. This has been coordinated with Subcommittee E08.07 Note: there are various symbols used for crack opening displacement including 5 for E2472, for E1290 and E1820 Also, several other terms being balloted.
