Work Item: ASTM WK25874 - New Practice for Establishing the Efficacy of Solid, Non-Food, Contact Surfaces, as Self-Sanitizing Surfaces

Developed by Subcommittee: E35.15 | Committee E35 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

1.1 This practice describes a procedure to evaluate the efficacy of solid, non-food, contact surfaces as self-sanitizing surfaces. This test should be viewed as an initial efficacy test. 1.2 It is the responsibility of the investigator to determine whether good laboratory practices (GLPs) are required and to follow them when appropriate. 1.3 This practice may involve hazardous materials, chemicals, and microorganisms and should be performed only by persons who have had formal microbiological training. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5. Units--The units stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with this standard. The standard is needed for testing of inherently antimicrobial materials for their efficacy in killing/inhibiting bacteria, fungi, and/or viruses.
