1. Scope
1.0This practice is to determine the air permeance rating of penetrations though an air barrier which are part of an air barrier assembly, which then is used as part of a total air barrier system in a building. 1.1This practice is intended to determine the air barrier property/air leakage rate of the penetrations though an air barrier which are part of an air barrier assembly. This method provides a procedure for preparing the test assembly and further describes the application of products to the assembly prior to conducting ASTM E 283. 1.2This practice allows testing laboratories to accurately quantify the air leakage rate of anchors, pipes, screws and xxxx using ASTM E 283 and reporting the data in L/(sm2) according to ASTM E 29. 1.3This practice is used in conjunction with ASTM E 283. Although ASTM E 283 is a laboratory test method used with fenestration products, individuals interested in performing field air leakage tests on installed units should reference ASTM E 783. 1.4 There are no other known practices or test methods specific for testing the air leakage rate of penetrations through airtight assemblies. 1.5This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determines the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
This new standard is intended for use by manufacturers of materials, contractors, qualilty assurance professionals to enable the evaluation of the airtightness performance of construction joints and junctions within the air barrier system.
