1. Rationale
Rationale for ballot: This version shows all changes. Revised Section 8.1 on Procedure and added APPENDIX A that addresses the application of F1624 specifically to fasteners. Revised Section 8.1 has essentially the original format, with the loading protocol grouped into three hardness ranges. The reason for the change is that these recommended protocols make it easier to work with and provides a much quicker, more systematic and accurate method of reaching the threshold load. There is no reason to conduct the first test as a 24-hr step load test for a fastener at 36 HRC. It will definitely attain 100%. So starting rates have been lowered to a point were a reduction in load would normally be found for that hardness range. Then the results converge much more rapidly. These groupings have evolved from doing extensive testing of fasteners over these hardness ranges. The addition of an APPENDIX addressing fasteners is in response to many requests by other fastener committees such as ASTM F16, ASTM E488, IFI 144, NASM1312-5, and ICC/AC193 to provide more detail into ASTM F11624 that specifically addresses fasteners.
