1. Rationale
The current standard does not provide clear direction for the specifier regarding the use of initial rate of absorption (IRA) information. Research data is available that helps clarify the relationship between IRA, bond strength, and moisture penetration. Additionally, mortars that use mortar cement and masonry cement have been recognized in the mortar specification, C 270, and are frequently used in masonry construction with bricks specified under C 216. Some of these mortars were not considered in historical IRA research which documents the current C 216 wording.
