1. Scope
These test methods establish the requirements and laboratory procedures for performing abrasivity tests on rock specimen surfaces. Rock specimen surfaces may be freshly broken, saw cut or core drilled. The abrasiveness of a rock is determined by measuring the resulting wear flat on a conical point of known angle that is displaced across the specimen surface at a specified distance under a constant load. The unit of abrasiveness is defined as a wear flat of o.1 mm diameter.
Abrasiveness is a property of rock that is measured in order to assess the suitability of the rock for mechanical excavation. Users of abrasivity test results include tunnelling contractors and consultants.
