1. Scope
1.1 This test method covers the determination of the concentration of benzotriazole (BTA) and Irgamet 39 in new and used electrical insulating oils by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using UV detection. 1.2 For new oils, this method aids in compliance monitoring of ASTM D 3487. For in-service oils, this method allows for the detection and quantitative determination of these additives. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitation prior to use.
Such additives are being added to new products without the buyers knowledge or consent. There are certain situations where these passivators need to be added to mitigate a problem condition and thus a method needs to be developed to monitor the presence of the additives and determine the concentration. Users are those who purchase or test transformer oil.
