Work Item: ASTM WK23495 - New Guide for Green and Sustainable Site Assessment and Cleanup

Developed by Subcommittee: E50.04 | Committee E50 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

The standard guide provides a framework that supports the site assessment and cleanup process through the provision of a comprehensive and integrated consideration of environmental, economic, and social factors within the regulatory context of a site. The guide provides a consistent, transparent roadmap that identifies and incorporates environmental best management practices and/or metrics and overlays existing decision criteria for corrective actions with a broader range of considerations than traditional practice to demonstrate that corrective actions are green and/or sustainable. The goal of the standard guide is to first provide useful information on environmental/green, economic, and social aspects that can be used within the site assessment and cleanup process and also to present a scalable framework to include these aspects within the decision making process under various cleanup programs thus addressing green and sustainable remediation (GSR) practices. The Standard Guide will include four separate sections: environmental, economic, social, and the integration and balancing of all aspects in a framework including a tiered evaluation of sustainability. The framework is designed to balance and maximize the short and long-term environmental, economic and social goals considered under various cleanup programs to the benefit of the stakeholders, while continuing to protect human health and the environment.
