1. Scope
Provide a standard procedure to evaluate the ability of an attic or crawlspace vent to resist the entry of burning embers and flame through the vent opening.
Damage assesment surveys of structures after wildfires have shown that ember entry through vents have resulted in the ignition, and subsequent loss, of buildings. A new chapter in the California Building Code requires that eave vents resist the entry of embers and flame. Vents are currently being designed to resist these exposures. To date, no procedure is available to evaluate performance. Potential users of this standard would be commercial test laboratories and vent manufacturers.
