Work Item: ASTM WK19803 - New Specification for Additional Requirements for Universal Design of Fitness Equipment Optimization for Inclusive Use for Persons with Functional LImitations and Impairments

Developed by Subcommittee: F08.30 | Committee F08 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

1.1 The intent of this specification is to provide additional requirements not set forth in the referenced ASTM standards for optimization of the design of commercial fitness equipment for access by users with functional limitations or impairments. The information presented in this specification is necessary to assure that the fitness product being designed is accessible, functional, and safe for both users with and without functional limitations or impairments when the equipment is operated according to the manufacturers operation instructions. Designers shall use this specification in conjunction with the ASTM standards and test methods referenced in Section 2. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Fitness is not just for able-bodied individuals. Fitness products that are designed for use by all individuals need to be designed with specific parameters considered.
