Developed by Subcommittee: D04.38 | Committee D04 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

Provide a standard performance based specification for thermoplastic pavement marking materials. The specification covers composition requirements and physical properties of the marking material that can be tested in the laboratory that are indicative of field performance. The specification also covers the necessary application requirements to achieve a successful installation and the minimum field performance levels of the markings covered as it relates to daytime color, night time color, retroreflectvitity, and durability as well as recommneded field test methods to determine compliance. There is an increased interest by state and local agencies responsible for pavement markings to establish minimum field performance requirements for pavement markings. This specificatinon sets forth such a set of requirements for thermoplastic pavement marking materials that can be used by State Department of Transportations and municipalities to establish performance based pavement marking programs.
