1. Scope
1.1 This test method describes the procedure for measuring total mercury concentration in crude oil by combustion of the sample and subsequent quantification of the mercury by cold vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy (CVAAS). 1.2 Total mercury concentrations from 0.5 ng/g to 1000 ng/g may be measured.
The mercury concentration is an important parameter that affects the ability of a refiner to process a specific crude oil. Elemental mercury presents occupational safety, health and environmental concerns.
