1. Scope
This Practice describes a technique that can be used to rate how well proposed building components or assemblies can be realized as a building. The term constructability is used to emphasize that the focus of this evaluation is intended to address those aspects of a design that are implemented during the construction process and are within the typical scope and responsibility of the constructor.
Like value engineering, quality management, and risk analysis, constructability is a badly abused term-of-art in the construction industry. Unlike VE, QM, or RA, constructability has no generally accepted definition or process. Evaluations are largely anecdotal, typically based on checklists derived from personal experience. The proposed Standard Practice describes a structured approach that encourages communication among the entire project team, accountability, and follow-up.
