1. Scope
Carbon monoxide chmisorption on noble metals catalyst is a valuable technique for determining active surface area. The proposed technique provides a basis for the preparation and determination of the percent dispersion or more simply put it is an estimate of the ratio of catalytically active surface atoms to bulk atoms for a supported metal catalyst.
No standard exists in this area. Characterization of active metal surface area is widely used in the petroleum and chemical industries. It is also a valuable tool for evaluating new materials used in fuel cells.
