1. Scope
This test method covers the energy absorption properties of multidirectional polymer matrix composite laminates under edgewise crushing. A flat, rectangular composite coupon is subjected to an edgewise compression loading produced either by a quasi-static compression loading or a drop-weight impact. A specimen support fixture is specified for stabilizing the specimen against buckling while allowing the specimen to crush without interference. A trigger is used on the end of the specimen at which crushing is desired. Energy absorption is quantified in terms of the measured force and displacements during coupon crushing.
Currently, there is interest within the automotive and rotorcraft industries to use composite materials for applications that require crashworthiness, or high energy absorption. Currently, there are no standardized test methods for measuring energy absorption in composites
