WK15789 New Practice for Practice for Design and Construction of Porous Asphalt Pavements for Stormwater Management

Developed by Subcommittee: D04.23
See Related Work by this Subcommittee
Date Initiated: 06-20-2007

1. Scope

Provide a practice for designing open-graded hot mix asphalt mixtures and construction of the pavement structure which includes excavation, placement of geotextile, stone recharge recharge bed and open-graded (porous) asphalt surface for pavements that allow storm water to flow through the pavement surface into a stone recharge bed eventually infiltrating into the soil. Porous asphalt pavements with stone recharge beds have been used for over 20 years as a part of stormwater management, reducing peak and cumulative flow from paved surface. Recent storm water regulations in the US have greatly increased the interest in these pavements. Most agencies have little or no experience in the design and construction of these pavements, therefore a standard is necessary to help agencies and owners on the design and construction of these pavements.

Keywords
