(What is a Work Item?)

Work Item: ASTM WK14724 - Revision of E1633-02a Standard Specification for Coded Values Used in the Electronic Health Record

1. Rationale

The completion of the 2008 E-1633 revision and its approval, as well as the Revisions to E-1384, have brought up to date all of the steps needed for fleshing out the structure and content of the EHR. The current state of work now includes identification, in the Annex 2 of E-1384, of the Core Data Set identified by the National Committee on Health Statistics. A new revision of Specification E-1633-08 to include further value sets for the E-1384 data elements that have been previously included within E-1384 is now ready. The value sets for this E-1633 revision will be consolidated and, like the previous E-1633 revisions, will be actively coordinated with HL7s models for Version 2.x and 3.0 and their associated data elements and values sets (HL7 Object Attributes and Master Tables) so that the concepts are consistent. The coordination work is intended to ensure that HL7s work on messaging is consistent with both the E-31s EHR structural work and can be further coordinated with work by CLSI on the definition of the Clinical Laboratory Information Domain.
