1. Rationale
Because of potential exposure to hostile environments it is desirable to coat ASTM A490 bolts, however the specification restricts coating by ôhot-dip zinc coating, mechanical deposition, or electroplating with zinc or other metallic coatingsö. Following completion of an extensive investigation conducted in accordance with IFI-144, the results were presented to the ASTM F16 Committee on fasteners (F16 Research Report 06-XX). The investigation demonstrated that DACROMET« (Zn/Al Corrosion Protective Coating) when applied per ASTM F1136 to ASTM A490 bolts does not cause delayed cracking by internal hydrogen embrittlement, nor does it accelerate environmental hydrogen embrittlement by cathodic hydrogen absorption.
