ASTM WK13713

(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK13713 - Revision of E119 - 05a Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials

Active Standard: E119 - 09c

Developed by Subcommittee: E05.11 | Committee E05 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Rationale

The conditions of acceptance in ASTM E 119 for certain samples require the sample not permit the passage of flames or hot gasses to the unexposed surface hot enough to ignite cotton waste. These requirements are found in Tests of Bearing and Partitions (Section 16), Tests of Nonbearing Walls and partitions (Section 18), and Tests of Floors and Roofs Restrained (Section 31) and Unrestrained (Section 32). No provisions are currently contained within E 119 as to how to conduct the cotton waste test, such as are provided in ASTM E 1966 and E 2307. Various subcommittee and Main committee ballots have been submitted over the past two years on this ballot item. This fourth draft of the ballot is intended to reflect the previous task group discussions. It is being proposed that this will be a new section which will be inserted into the Conduct of Tests section of ASTM E 119-09 as a new Section 11 immediately following Section 10, Fire Endurance Test. Subsequent sections, figures, and notes will be renumbered accordingly.
