1. Scope

There are many documents published by the aviation regulating agencies that describe how to obtain specific approvals and certifications for aircraft and aeronautical products. In the U.S. the FAA has indicated that it will issue Special Airworthiness Certificates for UASs, provided that the applicant follows the procedures defined in the numerous documents that are applicable. This Guide attempts to collect and present, in as simplified form as possible, the procedures that have been established for obtaining a Special Certificate of Airworthiness (Special CofA). In addition this document provides background information concerning Type Certification of aircraft that might apply to UASs. The path to achieving a Special Certificate of Airworthiness for a UAS is not fully defined, but numerous sources of information exist that are relevant. This guide attempts to provide industry proponents with information relevant to obtaining a Special CofA for a UAS and more generally, for Type Certification of aircraft.
