1. Scope
This guide will provide inexperienced Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) users with a guide for interpretation of mass spectral data. It will include discussions of contamination, peaks commonly observed for certain organic functional groups, the importance of isotopic analysis, and differentiating between organic and inorganic peaks. This guide will have several mass spectra including positive and negative mass spectra of commonly occuring contaminants. 1.2.This guide is applicable to most Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometers and may or may not be applicable to other SIMS instrumentation.
This guide will be very helpful for training new employees and/or students in the interpretation of SIMS mass spectral data, which is oftentimes the most difficult part of the learning process.
