1. Scope
This document states the standard for front wheel retention devices for all bicycles equipped with manually-operated retention devices such as a quick release.
These standards are only for bicycles equipped with manually-operated retention devices, and do not apply to tool-operated wheel fastening devices.
The intent of this standard is to define the operation and performance of secondary wheel retention devices of two types, with the focus on preventing wheel separation in the case of faulty use or failure of the primary wheel retention device.
Manually operated wheel retention systems shall not be used on bicycles with 20 inch diameter wheels or smaller (excluding adult specialty bicycles such as folding, and recumbent).
