Work Item: ASTM WK12395 - Revision of D2979 - 01 Standard Test Method for Pressure-Sensitive Tack of Adhesives Using an Inverted Probe Machine

Active Standard: D2979 - 01(2009)

Developed by Subcommittee: D14.50 | Committee D14 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Rationale

Rationale: This Test Method is due for the 5 year review. 1. This Test Method is being revised as a combined standard, as defined in H2.4.2 in the ASTM Form & Style Manual: H2.4.2 combined standard, nan ASTM standard in which rationalized SI units and inch-pound units are included in the same standard, with each system of units to be regarded separately as standard. (For example, A36/A36M). Rationalized units are defined: H2.3 rationalization, n, in ASTM standards(formerly hard conversion) the planned simplification of a converted value achieved by modifying the value to reflect dimensions or physical characteristics of existing real measurements or configurations; as a result of this change the object or quantity may not be interchangeable with the original. These changes are being made to accommodate changes in the pressure-sensitive tape industry, which is moving toward the use of modular metric widths, in which the replacement width for one inch is 24 mm and the replacement width for half-inch tape is 12mm. This change is voluntary and not used universally; both SI and US Customary units are used. The proposed changes to the standard are also in accordance with section 6.2 of D5750 Standard Guide for Width and Length of Pressure-Sensitive Tape: 6.2 When the SI system is used as the primary measurement system, widths are stated in a modular system, with 3-mm increments for rolls under 24 mm, 6 mm for increments for roll widths between 24 and 48 mm, and 12 mm for rolls widths over 48 mm. 2. A new section has been added to the standard, as section 6, Reagents and Materials. This section has been modeled on other methods for testing pressure-sensitive adhesives and tape, such as D6463 and D3654, to provide consistency in material description between test methods. Sections 6, 7, and 8 contain information that are common to both Method A and Method B, and have been moved here to avoid repetition in the descriptions of the two methods. Revisions have been made to sections describing certain apparatus (9, 12) and the cleaning procedures for the stainless steel test panels (11.5, 14.6). Many Test Methods for pressure-sensitive adhesives require adhesion to a standard stainless steel panel. Presentation of the information describing items and procedures that are commonly used in these test methods should be consistent for all standards under the jurisdiction of D14.50, where possible, to avoid confusion. These revisions are modeled on D6463 and D3654, are consistent with language used in D3330 Standard Test Method for Peel Adhesion of Pressure-Sensitive Tape and WK211 Standard test Method for Shear Adhesion Failure Temperature (SAFT) of Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives, and are not expected to alter the results of the test. 3. The device used in Test Method B has been updated to reflect the current model of the Loop Tack Tester. Appropriate changes have been made to the procedure described in section 14 that correlate with the operation of this model tester. 4. Dimensions in the figures have been updated. 5. Updates have been made to names and addresses of manufacturers, and other information provided in this standard, as needed.
