Work Item: ASTM WK11343 - New Test Method for Blast Resistance of Trash Receptacles

Developed by Subcommittee: E54.08 | Committee E54 Home | Contact Staff Manager

Description Related Products
1. Scope

1.1This test method establishes scalable performance tests to verify the operational capability of Blast Resistant Trash Receptacles (BRTR) to mitigate or reduce the hazardous effects of explosive devices detonated within the container. 1.2This test method can be used to evaluate the ability of a BRTR to mitigate or reduce the hazardous effects of explosive devices detonated within the container, to include: 1.2.1Containment or mitigation of blast effects i.e. the fireball, of detonation products; 1.2.2Containment or mitigation of ballistic hazards from either primary (from the explosive device itself such as a pipe bomb) or secondary hazards (from the container or the environment in which the BRTR is placed) effects; 1.2.3Containment or mitigation of the overpressure shock wave generated from the detonation of the device. 1.3This test method will be scalable for a range of explosive charges ranging from pipe bomb threats to larger quantities of explosives equivalent to explosive devices that are able to be concealed on or carried by a single person. 1.4Special test methods will allow for evaluation of special test objects such as pipe bombs and
