1 Scope
1.1 This standard provides safety and performance requirements for portable pools for residential use.
1.2 This standard outlines safety requirements to enhance the safety of portable pools.
1.3 This standard addresses hazards associated with childhood drowning, sanitation, electrical safety, and entrapment.
1.4 This standard covers both portable pools that are equipped with pumps and filters and those not equipped with pumps and filters.
1.5 This standard covers all type of portable pools, i.e. inflatable pools, one piece vinyl pools, plastic pools, soft sided pools.
1.6 This standard covers all sizes of portable pools regardless of the height, width, or volume of water contained within the pool.
1.7 This standard does not cover public pools or those in commercial amusement parks.
1.8 This standard does not cover water fountains, water displays, or fish ponds.
This standard has been developed to address the risk of drowning associated with portable pools. At least 240 children under 5 years old drown in pools each year nationwide and an additional 1800 are treated in hospital emergency rooms for pool submersion injuries. The majority of the cases involve residential pools.
