Interlaboratory Study 702 was conducted to establish a precision statement forD4944, Field Determination of Water Moisture Content of Soil by the CalciumCarbide Gas Pressure Tester. This Round Robin Test was conducted by theFlorida Department of Transportation (FLDOT) at their State Materials Office inGainesville, FL. Specifically a round robin test program was conducted June 14,2007 by eight DOT technicians determining water contents of processed soilusing calcium carbide gas pressure testers (commonly called “Speedy MoistureTester”) and comparing to an oven dried determination using portions of eachtest specimen. The FLDOT permits the use of nuclear gauges for determiningthe wet density of compacted earthworks; however, with the exception ofaggregate base material, the associated in-situ water content is determined withthe use of a gas pressure tester of the type specified in ASTM D4944.
